bietet die winapi funktionen mit denen man einen zweiten mauszeiger erscheinen lassen und steuern kann? oder braucht man dazu zwingend einen treiber oder ist das vielleicht ueberhaubt nicht moeglich?

Als neue Maus würde ich ein Fenster im Vordergrund vorschlagen. Dann hätten sich deine Befürchtungen auch erledigt.

hm na das wird wohl die beste loesung sein.
aber wie sieht es wenn ich zugriff auf die kernel API habe? damit muss es doch sauberer moeglich sein? oder steckt die ganze mauszeiger logik so tief im system? das sollte doch eigentlich bei etwas so trivialem mit einem system das auf module setzt nicht der fall sein, richtig?

Einer der letzten kommentare auf der seite von WebFritzi bestaetigt das auch. Aber trozdem hat jemand schon soetwas entwickeln koennen wie es scheint und die ergebnisse sind sehr interessant

Hi everyone,

Two weeks ago, at the Microsoft Research Summit 2006 (Guadalajara México), I saw an XP laptop with a multi-mouse setup that apparently did what we all here hope to be able to do with multiple pointers and mice.

At the summit Kentaro Toyama (http://research.microsoft.com/toyama/) from the Technology for Emerging Markets group at Microsoft Research (MSR) India presented the "rationale" for developing a Windows XP driver that supported multiple mice and their corresponding color-coded pointers in screen on a single computer.

I found interesting that MSR delve into multi-mouse applications not for high performance computing and usability purposes like the ones expressed in this forum, but to address the needs and aspirations of people in emerging-market countries, including those who are increasingly consuming computing technologies and services, as well as those for whom access to computing technologies remains largely out of reach. Using multi-mouse (as they call it) several kids can play and learn on a single inexpensive computer.

Later I had the opportunity to play with the multi-mouse at the summit's Demofest. Kentaro had a Windows XP laptop computer with an USB Hub and 5 or 6 identical mice connected to it, and were demonstrating its functionality with three applications intended to be used as educational tools for children.

The three applications were mostly educational games, one of them pronounced a letter in English while showing a grid filled with letters, the first contestant to click the correct letter on screen won “one point” (there vas a color bar graph showing the score of every contestant, based on the color of its pointer). Another game was a simpler one with a grid of white rectangles, nine wide, eight deep. When the contestants clicked on the rectangles, they changed to the color of the cursor that had clicked on them, with a timer counting the remaining seconds till end, we all tried to accumulate as much screen “real-state “ as possible, claiming others’ rectangles. Kentaro beat us at this one, seems like he has a lot of practice :). The third applications was a simple paint application that allowed all of us to paint at the same time, holding the left button to draw lines (as usual) and all the common functionality of paint programs.

While I did not tried to resize windows or perform drag & drop operations the system was very consistent and performed good on all applications. I have to admit that I ‘m not sure if the driver works only on applications specifically written for it or just any windows application, but Kentaro did mentioned that they had to re-write the windows driver from the ground up in order to make it work. Sorry for not answering all the questions that naturally arise, but this was my first experience with the concept of multiple pointers and by the time I started to think about all this, it was too late to ask Kentaro directly (two weeks late).

What I do can tell you, is that the group is planning to release the driver and the corresponding SDKs this summer and since I was very much exited about the possibilities and no specific date was provided, my desperation made me google the subject till I arrived here.
