Das %i in dem String ist (wie %d auch) ein Platzhalter für eine Integer-Variable. %f würde beispielsweise für einen float-Wert stehen, %s für einen String. Du kannst so Strings wie etwa "Ich lerne seit %i Tagen C++." formulieren und das %i eben durch einen Zahlenwert ersetzen (im Beispiel der letzte Parameter). Das funktioniert aber nur bei bestimmten Funktionen, die Strings eben auf diese Art interpretieren (CString::format in der MFC beispielsweise auch). Alles weitere siehe MSDN.

Btw, wenn du schon selbst sagst, dass du kein C/C++ beherrschst, solltest du nicht gleich mit WinAPI-Programmen beginnen. Fange lieber klein an und schreibe erstmal ein paar Konsolen-Programme, um die Basics zu lernen. Sonst machst du dir selbst das Leben schwer.

Wie gesagt, ich nutze Unicode nicht und kenne mich da nicht aus. Deine weitere Suche sollte z.B. auf msdn.com stattfinden.
