Does Your Hardware Make a Noticeable Difference in C++ Build Times?

  • I've been wondering how much difference hardware actually makes when working on larger C++ projects.

On smaller projects, compilation usually feels pretty quick, but once you start dealing with multiple source files, templates, and bigger dependencies, build times can become a bit frustrating.

I'm curious whether most of the difference comes down to CPU performance, RAM, or storage speed. For example, would an Intel Core i7 laptop with 16GB RAM and an NVMe SSD be enough for reasonably large C++ projects, or would you notice the limitations pretty quickly?

For those who work with C++ regularly:

    • Does a faster CPU make the biggest difference to your build times?
    • Have you noticed much improvement after moving from 16GB to 32GB RAM?
    • Do you prefer developing on a desktop or a laptop?
    • Are there any compiler or build-system settings that made a noticeable difference for you?

I'd be interested to hear what hardware you're using and how it handles your projects.

One thing I've also noticed is that parallel builds can make a big difference on larger projects. Using tools like CMake with Ninja can help make better use of multiple CPU cores, so the build setup itself matters too, not just the hardware. I'd be interested to know which build systems everyone here prefers.
